The Monk: A Priest/Warrior Melee Build *Disclaimer - due to recent patches many sections of this guide are out of date. I will be correcting and revising over time, please leave feedback pertaining to post 1818 BMonk info. Thank you. Welcome and thanks for taking an interest in this guide. While I do not profess to be an expert at ROM, or the Monk build specifically, I felt our forums lack proper guides to most builds and this is my attempt to rectify this situation 1 build at a time. I encourage feedback from the community. If my numbers / insights / whatever seem off or misleading please let me know and I will do my best to update the guide accordingly. With that out of the way …. Intro: What is a Monk? BATTLE MONK STANCE- When activated, physical attack is raised by 30 points, defense is raised by 2%, and healing effectiveness is reduced by 3%. this stance lasts 600 sec. Priests have no melee skills WTF! EXPLOSION OF FIGHTING SPIRIT – Does 80% of main hand weapon dmg to target. Must be in Battle Monk Stance And Chain of Fighting Spirit (CoFS) 25/25. CHAIN OF FIGHTING SPIRIT – Fires off 2 hits for 90% main hand dmg. (Requires Battle Monk Stance) To round out the Monks melee attack arsenal we borrow Slash and Whirlwind from our Warrior half-self, and our final elite skill Ascending Dragon Strike (ADS) 30/30. ASCENDING DRAGON STRIKE – Cause 180% of the main hand weapon’s damage to target. (Requires the Battle Monk Stance) To supplement our melee abilities Priests also come with an array of useful buffs and survival skills that are well suited for melee combat. These include but are not limited to Grace of Life (HP buff that parties love and you’ll find invaluable), Amplified Attack (another crowd pleaser and a major boost to melee dps), Regen (the reason everyone loves a Priest secondary), and a 30 minute self rez (like it or not we all die, and sometimes running back to your body is not a good idea). Also the 10minute Priest Full heal is a life saver in party and solo. The Warrior secondary also allows our Monk to use axes (some speculation as to the best MH option remains, some prefer sceptre, others maces, but I’ve found axes quite useful) and a very nice Str buff from Brute Strength. All of this sounds great but where should I put my TP? - Contrary to conventional reasoning maxing your elite skills is not the way of the Monk. (IMHO – there is some debate on the subject) - Suggested TP investments – Priest
– Suggested TP Investments – Warrior
I’m with you so far, how about some help on gear. - For a Monk the stats most valued are melee stats, as one might expect. The plus side … cloth armor with these stats is oft cheaper than caster centric cloth. Downside … hard to find boss drops that pertain to your build, and will naturally upset natural melee builds if you roll on “their” weapons / jewellery. - Stat distribution:
- Weapons
Can you explain how the Monk can be considered a valid melee alternative? Certainly friends: Reading above you will notice all the BMonk elite skills are melee oriented. EoFS can be spammed at rate of around .75s which makes it a truly devilish skill combined with a high damage weapon. CoFS is a 1s cast on a 5s timer that does roughly double the damage of EoFS assuming similar level TP investment. This makes CoFS the nuke of choice. ADS had been rejigged as of 1816 and now has no C/D but had it’s damage reduced. This will be your primary rage dump attack after 30/30. Pre 30/30 Slash is your main rage dump of choice, and the damage on it is very reasonalbe (the DoT is a nice gimme as well). BMS and AmpAttk allow the BMonk to reach respectable Pattack numbers given the reduced reffectiveness of STR for priests. Great! So I can melee and (almost) never die, what about groups, what is my role, what should be expected of me? If a group needs a Priest, you’re a Priest. Sorry to disappoint but no matter how well regarded the Monk may eventually become you are a Priest primary and as such are expected to heal in most groups. If a group already has a Priest you can expect to be a buff Bot, as well as backup healer. Again sad but true. In some groups if the healer can handle it (mostly the case on trash but often on bosses as well) you can go dps happy. Your greatest assets here will be your ability to self heal, and thus save the main healer mana, your buffs, and a second self rez in case of party whipes, or if the main healer goes down you can step up and keep the team alive. In some cases (usually while questing but possible in instances) you may be able to tank! That’s right, this is by no means recommended, and if you are asked to do so ensure you are a few levels higher than the rest so mobs won’t hit as hard. The dps generated by EoFS spam, and multi mob agro holding ability of Bone Chill allows the Monk to fill in as a tank from time to time. The Monk is at heart a solo artist, Jack of all trades, master of none. A well played Monk may appear to be a master of all but will never be a substitute for role specific builds centered on DD, Tanking or primary Healing. I’m sorry but this is the honest truth and should you choose to make a Monk it’s a case of gamer be ware. This is a highly enjoyable build but is certainly not for everyone. I believe sceptics will be surprised at the versatility of this build, and players will enjoy the novelty of such a unique build. Thanks to: 1h or 2h that is the Question! Arguments: Response: 2. The vast majority of Staffs do not have a slow weapon speed. They remain around 2.6 – 2.8 speed. They also distribute damage more or less equally between Pdmg and Mdmg. (where as an axe has a higher Pdmg coefficient.) The benefit of using a staff is Mdmg is the only way to boost healing outside of skills or rare +healing gear (very rare). Given 1h’s can reach 2.7+ speeds and they focus on Pdmg, they will actually generate more physical dps and have the added protection of a shield. *Note – found myself a VERY slow 2h staff and transmuted it to tier 4. with over 500 damage on a lvl 40 weapon. i shopped around and found no 1h that came close. Once I reach 40 i’ll be updating this section with my findings. 3. Axes remain the weapon of choice for those concerned about pure Melee dps. With rage generation problems a thing of the past, and the cool down on ADS removed Axes are unquestionably the best Melee dps option. Coles Notes version: 1. not good / not great. I know this is an old post, but it still pulls up high on a google search list. I just have 1 thing to add to this (because I’m bored even if no one else reads it).
Warrior base skills also has a defense boost skill (forget what its called, like berserk but lowers offense and raises defense substantially). Keeping this skill near max makes you a VERY viable tank in battle monk, especially when you can time it right with your heals and damage shield. I’ve solo’d many bosses that most others my level couldn’t even attempt thanks to this skill.
Axes are still weapon of choice for dps because of the lower speed and bleed with slash. Just remember to keep your gear updated as much as possible, as your defense boosts are percentage based, so the higher your base defense, the more bonus you get with it in battle monk.
