First of all: This is a summary of my observations in regards to bloodsmelting and my experiences with it.
I would like to thank DuckSauce’s guide for serving as my base knowledge source and alot of the people in Billows server for answering my bloodsmelting questions. And of course, Kaena for putting up with me.
Here we go.
Espers have an invisible growth rate on them that you don’t see. You only find out it’s growth rate by leveling it up and comparing the new stats with the old stats. Each tier of esper (Trigram, 15, 75, 105) has its own max growth rate. In terms of max growth rates, Trigrams have the lowest while 105 ones have the highest "ceiling". Upon initially getting the espers however, you do not know what their growth rate is.
An esper becomes Heavenly/Divined when its average growth rate in all aspects goes over a certain number in relation to its tier.
I will elaborate on this later. For now, let’s play with some numbers.
Let’s say you just bought a level 75 esper from the npc. You do not know any of its growth rate because it’s still level 1. However, you want it to get to Heavenly/Divined. There are many ways for you to do this.
The first way is what I call the "Trigram" method (credits to DuckSauce). This involves buying up trigrams from the NPC and only keeping the ones that are Heavenly/Divined. You then use these trigrams as your source esper and keep bloodsmelting them onto your main level 75 esper. Eventually, your 75 esper will become Heavenly, and then Divined.
This is the science behind it:
Let’s pretend your fresh store bought 75 precious esper had an invisible growth rate of 2.8 minimum attack and 1.7 on resists. Meaning, if it started at 5 minimum attack and 3 stun resist and you leveled it to level 2, you would see it have 7 minimum attack and 4 stun resist, but at level 3 you will see 10 minimum attack and 6 stun resist.
Now is when the heavenly/divined trigrams come into play.
As a general guideline from my experience, Heavenly/Divined trigrams have an average invisible growth of 4.0 min attack and 2.5 resists. Some trigrams could have 3.6 attack and 3.0 resist. You never know since it’s invisible. This is where luck comes in.
When you bloodsmelt these Heavenly/Divined Trigrams onto your fresh store-bought level 75 esper, you’re averaging your 75 esper’s invisible growth with the trigram’s invisible growth. If you know a little bit of math, you’ll realize that EVENTUALLY after bloodsmelting for a while, your 75 esper’s growth would be approaching the 4.0 min attack / 2.5 resist limit. Thankfully enough, to get Divined status on a level 75 esper, having these growth numbers are enough. HOWEVER, to get a level 105 esper to divined, 4.0 min attack/2.5 resists ARE NOT ENOUGH! This is why this trigram method won’t work in getting a 105 esper to divined unless you are really lucky. For the game to call a 105 esper "Divined" in quality, it has to have 5.0 or above min. attack growth and 3.0 or above resist growth.
So, how exactly do you get a 105 esper to divined? Well, you have to pump its growth up, silly.
Here comes the other way to do it. I call this the "Orange" method.
But first, let’s give some background on what makes an esper stat "orange".
A stat is orange on an esper because it has ABOVE AVERAGE growth for that particular stat.
A particular example would be an orange attack stat on an esper would have a 5.0 min attack growth or more. At least, this is coming from my trigram observations. However, be warned that if you have an orange statted trigram that is precious quality, it means that the growth on its other stats will most likely be BELOW AVERAGE because a precious quality esper has only average total growth. Think about this for a second and let it sink in. This is just basic math.
Keep in mind though that trigrams have the lowest growth "ceilings". Meaning, while an orange statted trigram will have high growth in 1 aspect, every other growth on it will most likely drag your average down. There’s just not enough room for the numbers to jiggle in. If you have an orange statted level 15 or 75 esper for example, it will probably have the same growth on the orange stat as a trigram BUT ALL THE OTHER ASPECTS OF ITS GROWTH WILL PROBABLY BE HIGHER WHEN COMPARED TO A TRIGRAM.
This is the key part to remember. While you can bloodsmelt to make your esper’s growth go UP, you can as easily make it go DOWN. Getting divined status is just a game of averages. The only problem is that you don’t know the numbers you have.
Anyway, back to getting a 105 esper to divined. There is no sure-fire way to get it to divined. However, if we applied this bloodsmelting theory, you might have a better chance on using level 15 espers since they have higher growth ceilings than trigrams. So if you see an orange statted level 15 esper, it could mean that it has the same growth as a trigram (5.0 min attack) or it could be even higher than that. It only shows up orange if it goes above the 5.0 number, but you don’t know how high above it really is. And then, to counteract the lowering of your other stats, you can go and use a heavenly/divined trigram or level 15 esper to pump every other stat back up, and then repeat. This is pretty much the "specialization" technique that DuckSauce describes, I just explained the numbers behind it. Just imagine it like a seesawing of the numbers. You just have to figure out your own way to get the numbers high enough.
What you have to realize though is that getting a 105 Divined esper isn’t cheap or easy. It’s the 2nd to the last esper you’re going to use since getting mediums for 135 espers is a royal pain. I suggest having 2 105 espers. One you use for daily things and another one you exclusively bloodsmelt using the finest espers. Eventually with enough time and money, you will see your 105 esper become divined. Keep in mind that to get a divined 105 esper, the min. attack growth has to be above 5.0 and the resist growth has to be above 3.0
And lastly: Best Dragon Skin.
This is your best and worst friend. It transfers 100% of the growth on the source esper to your main esper.
What does this mean? Let’s say you have a divined 75 esper as a source and you use a best dragon skin as the medium. You put this on your main 105 esper. What happens is that your 105 esper will now have the same growth as your old 75 divined one. This is a good thing in that you KNOW you will have the same growth as your 75 one plus the initial stats of your 105 one. This is a bad thing in that your 105 esper might have had better growth than your 75 divined. Like I said, this is just mostly about tilting numbers to your favor.
That pretty much sums up everything anyone has to know about bloodsmelting. It’s not magic. It’s science and it’s math and it’s also a little bit of luck. I hope this helps you all in figuring out your own way of getting your espers to heavenly/divined. If you have any questions, I’ll try to answer them. But I think I covered everything there is to cover here.
