A while a go this poorly crafted kiting guide was made. It is still a work in progress. In fact, I forgot I made this and now it terribly needs revision.
Your probably thinking…What is kiting?
Kiting is a technique used by ranged fighters to take down monsters one at a time. It requires the ability to run while casting skills to chip away damage of enemies. As easy as this process seems people don’t always get it right and with kiting one mistake could lead to wasting a lot of pots, or maybe even losing lots of exp.
Kiting can be very advantageous to mages who either like to solo or do not want to waste money buying pots and restoning. By kiting you will restone less if you can do it successfully, and when mastered you may never need to use a stone grinding. However, this process is very slow for gaining exp if you want fast exp it is a lot better to party up and go grind out what you need.
A kiter’s best friends are the lightning spells and magic blast, with cast while run they are able to chip health away with less risk of the monster catching up to you during a cast. At 81 magic blast becomes the only spell you need for kiting (assuming you empower the cooldown to max).Their second best friend is the ice spells, slow gives you a lot of extra time to cast more spells. I rank lightning higher than ice though because mobs can resist the slow effect, or sometimes it just doesn’t work. Do not rely on slow when kiting.
This is a basic kiting process, tweak it to meet your own needs:
When kiting the first thing you should do is cast your ice spells at the maximum distance away. If you have ice blast cast that before ice bolt due to the cast time. When slow takes effect spam the skills that have low cooldown, like magic missile and fire bolt 01. I had the cooldown maxed on both, which makes spamming, slightly easier.
When the monster has traveled about half the distance it started from, start running while casting lightning spells and magic blast. When ample distance is available stop and cast 1-3 spells depending on if it has cast time or not and start running again. Slow should wear off about this time, if an ice spell’s cooldown is done cast immediately and start running. Then wait for distance and start spamming skills again and then when cooldown is ready for lightning spells/magic blast cast them again.
By now the monster is dead, or it may have died earlier. If not you probably shouldn’t kite that monster. If a monster ever gets too close but is low on health cast magic burst (not to be confused with magic blast), surprisingly it deals nice amounts of damage and is great for finishing off the monster. When you finish the monster if you took hits or used a lot of spells, rest. It takes time but using stones or pots isn’t always worth it, this is meant to be a slow process.
After 81, you’ll find yourself not using slow as much, and not using those skills it between cast while run. Instead, you will spam magic burst, which has a 1.2 second cool down thanks to cooldown empowerments and is cast while run.
Here are some basic points of kiting:
Know you map! Never run into a spawn of a place with obstacles, observe the area before you kite. Maps always have safe spots for resting or to kite at.
Do not kite against a wall. This is obvious, you have nowhere to run.
Never kite elite/hero/chief monsters. They run faster and hit harder and take too long to kill.
Kiting is never the same twice.
Life tap can be used during kiting, however do not use it when the mob is near.
