I) Introduction
Hey peoples!

First of all, this guide is dedicated to MrTape (loldon’task).

I wrote this guide without coalition, and would love it if you gave me credit or asked for my permission before posting any part of this elsewhere.

I first looked into MP Regeneration when I was first playing Dragon Nest, and later retouched the topic while working on my Elementalist due to the outrageous drain of Ice Shield.

I’d like everyone who is new to the concept of MP Regeneration and it’s mechanics to briefly visit the following link, as this is also where I first learned about MP Regeneration:

Please note that all the values listed in the aforementioned guide are now inaccurate for the current version of the game, but some of the basic mechanics of MP regeneration remain the same. This “guide” will only contain information for level 50 until a time that I can accurately extrapolate (or obtain) the base MP Regeneration value for level 60.

Also note that all calculations conducted revolve around Total MP Regeneration and that rates are listed in terms of MP per minute (the cost of most active skills is a percent of Base MP).

II) Some Things You Should Know:

  • Your Base MP Regeneration Rate at level 50 is 1419 MP per minute. Your Base MP Regeneration Rate is determined by a quadratic function of your level (in-progress). Your Base MP Regeneration ticks every 60/11 (~5.45) seconds for 129 each tick and is unaffected by Intelligence and Total MP. Your Base MP Regeneration Rate can be increased through equips that have MP Regeneration listed as a stat, through a Spirited Plate, and through MP Regeneration Potentials.
  • Your Additional MP Regeneration Rate is determined solely by your level of the skill Attuned Mind. At level 50, you can have level 3 Attuned Mind which recovers 4.5% of your Maximum MP every minute. Your Additional MP Regeneration ticks for 1/30 of the total listed amount every 2 seconds. Additional MP Regeneration is unaffected by any form of equipment.*
  • Maximum MP and Base MP are different: Base MP is the MP you gain from your Base Intelligence (found by hovering over your Intelligence; the white number). Maximum MP is your total amount of MP.
  • Mental Fortitude is a passive found in your Primary Class skill tree. Each level of Mental Fortitude increases your Maximum MP by 3%.
  • Attuned Mind is a passive found in your Primary Class skill tree. Each level of Attuned Mind increases Additional MP Regeneration rate (the amount of your total MP recovered per minute) by 1.5%.
  • When I refer to “Passive Active Skills,” I mean skills like Fire Shield, Elemental Aura, etc.
  • *Obviously, if you have equips that increase your Maximum MP, the amount recovered by your Additional MP Regeneration will increase proportionately.

III) Mental Fortitude or Attuned Mind?
Well, first of all, I thought I’d like to go off on a tangent to point out something; this is the formula for your Combined MP Regeneration at level 50:

Analyzing Combined MP Regeneration
If we use this as our function for our Combined MP Regeneration Rate, and we evaluate the function over x (to see our regeneration rate in terms of overall recovery of our Maximum MP) for values as Maximum MP increases towards infinity, we get the following:

Now, it’s kind of hard to add to infinity, so let’s divide everything by x before replacing x with ∞ to see what happens:
(11(a)(129+b)/∞) + 0.015ce + (0.015cde/∞)

In this case, as Maximum MP approaches infinity, (11(a)(129+b)/∞) and (0.015cde/∞) become infinitesimally small numbers, which can be discounted. The remaining term for our MP Regeneration Rate is 0.015ce.

From this we can see that as Maximum MP increases, the major factors in Combined MP Regeneration Rate are Maximum MP Modifiers and your Attuned Mind Level.

These calculations are merely to demonstrate how these trends occur as your Maximum MP continues to increase. Obviously, I don’t expect average players to have #1.INF Maximum MP (lolnubs). This also points out why you need Attuned Mind: as your Maximum MP increases, your Base MP Regeneration rate remains constant, and Additional MP Regeneration is the only form of MP Regeneration that scales proportionately with your Maximum MP; therefore, it is greatly beneficial to get at least one level of Attuned Mind (and therefore, Mental Fortitude) so you can maintain your MP over the course of longer dungeons. As to what level of each skill you need, take a look at the graph section and decide for yourself.

IV) Magical or Spirited?
Spirited and Magical benefit your Base MP Regeneration Rate and your Additional MP Regeneration Rate, respectively. But wait, how much does each one give? It can vary depending on potentials that you have and the levels of your Mental Fortitude and Attuned Mind. Here, I’ll simply be comparing a character using a Magical Plate to a character using a Spirited Plate, both with level 1 Mental Fortitude and level 3 Attuned Mind. There are a nearly limitless number of combinations of gear, potentials, etc.; for this reason, I’ve listed other combinations in the graphs section.

Alright, so what does this graph mean to us? From the graph, we can tell that the lines meet at (131020, 481.1). This is the point where a Spirited Plate and a Magical Plate provide the same percentile bonus to MP Regeneration Rate. Under these circumstances (no potentials, no additive Base MP Regeneration), a character using a Spirited Plate will gain more MP Regeneration by while having less than 131,020 MP, whereas a character with more than 131,020 (without a Magical Plate) will gain more MP Regeneration by equipping a Magical Plate as a result of Attuned Mind. If you already have potentials that increase Maximum MP, the Maximum MP where you benefit more from a Magical Plate will be slightly higher because the Maximum MP you see will already have passed through your increased (>1) Maximum MP Modifier. If you already have potentials or equipment that increase your Base MP Regeneration, the Maximum MP where you benefit more from a Magical Plate will be slightly higher because your increased Base MP Regeneration Rate will start at a higher y-value. If you are borderline to the magic number and want to know specifically which plate will help you the most, compare the two rates using the formula or leave your Maximum MP and equipment stats (potentials and Base MP Regeneration additives) in the comments section. However, if you are a Paladin or an Elementalist you may still want to take a Spirited Plate over a Magical plate, even when the overall MP Regeneration amount is lower; see section VI for more information.

VI) Elemental Shields and Auras
Seeing as I have a Guardian and an Elestra, and that this is the topic which originally started me on the topic of MP Regeneration, I felt obligated to include a section here.

As I’m sure you all know, Fire Shield, Ice Shield, Redemption Aura, and Elemental Aura consume a percentage of Maximum MP, whereas nearly all other skills consume a percentage of Base MP.

Elemental Shields and Auras tick for their listed amount every 2 seconds. For the purpose of calculations, I am going to convert their cost into terms of MP cost per minute. Elemental Shields tick for 15% MP every minute (0.5% every 2 seconds) and Auras tick for 6% MP every minute (0.2% every 2 seconds).

Using this information, plus what we know about MP Regeneration, we can determine the overall change in MP every minute:

For Elemental Shields, f = -0.15 and for Auras, f = -0.06.

Alright, I’m going to once again pretend that our character has infinite MP in order to see how our rate changes as our MP increases:

We can represent terms over ∞ as 0s for our purposes, and we get the following:
0.015ce + cf

Elemental Shields

c(0.015e – 0.15)*

*c is negligible in both expressions because it affects e and f proportionately.

From this we can see that where Maximum MP is infinite, each level of Attuned Mind decreases the drain of Elemental Shields by 10% and the drain of Auras by 25%. For this reason, I believe it is imperative that all users of either max the Attuned Mind skill. However, it is also vastly important to consider that as lower amounts of Maximum MP, your Base MP Regeneration rate can play a huge role in upkeeping the cost of your Elemental Shield or Aura because your Maximum MP (and therefore the cost of the shield) may not be that high. So, at what MP can you have an Elemental Shield or Aura on all the time, where the rate of change of your MP is zero?

For this, we’ll use level 3 Attuned Mind and assume that our Maximum MP has passed through all modifiers, while our Base MP Regeneration remains at the basal amount, 129.

Elemental Shields

From the graph, we can see that the rate of MP Drain and the rate of Combined MP Regeneration meet at (13514, 2027.1). That is to say, you are regaining 2027 MP every minute at 13, 514 MP, and 13, 514 MP is being drained every minute. As Maximum MP increases, the MP Drain from Elemental Shield increases over Combined MP Regeneration.
In these conditions, you would need less than 13, 514 MP to regain more MP than what is drained by an Elemental Shield.

Auras

From the graph, we can see that the rate of MP Drain and the rate of Combined MP Regeneration meet at (94600, 5676). That is to say, you are regaining 5676 MP every minute at 94,600 MP, and 94, 600 MP is being drained every minute. As Maximum MP increases, the MP Drain from Auras increases over Combined MP Regeneration.
In these conditions, you would need less than 94, 600 MP to regain more MP than what is drained by an Aura.

Please note that, by increasing your Base MP Regeneration Rate, you can effectively increase the point of intersection for the rates of Combined MP Regeneration and Drain Due to Aura or an Elemental Shield. Magical Weapons can also play a major role in reconciling the costs of these skills; for more information, see the section below.

VII) Magical Suffix
First of all, I will only be covering Magical Suffixes for weapons because they can be reliably accounted for, whereas the activation of the Magical Suffix on armour can be widely varying.

The Magical Suffix on weapons is the same for main-hand and off-hand weapons:
“When an attack makes 1 hits, there is a 20.0% chance to restore 1.45% MP.

Cooldown: 10 sec”

Assuming that the effect is triggered every time it comes off cooldown while in combat, you regain 1.45% of you Maximum MP every 10 seconds, or 8.7% of your Maximum MP every minute. Wait, Maximum MP? That’s the same thing as Additional Regeneration! Not only that, you get 8.7% of your Maximum MP every minute per weapon. However, it is important to note that this only takes place assuming you’re in combat and hitting enough enemies that your Suffix(es) trigger every time they’re off cooldown; this fact is somewhat negligible as you’ll (generally) only be using skills or persistent active skills while in combat.

VIII) What Can I Take Away from All of This (tl;dr)?

  • Everyone should take at least level 1 Attuned Mind.
  • If you need more MP Regeneration, increase the amount of MP recovered by increasing your Maximum MP through equips. If you still need more MP Regeneration, increase the level of your Attuned Mind. If you still need more MP Regeneration, you could possibly seek Maximum MP potentials, MP Regeneration Potentials, Magical Weapons, or level Mental Fortitude.
  • Anyone who is geared enough will inevitably benefit more from a Magical Plate than a Spirited Plate.* However, if you’re looking for more MP Regeneration, chances are you are not that geared.
  • *Elementalists and Paladins may benefit from a Spirited plate moreso than other classes.
